Weekly Round-Up (5/27/12 - 6/2/12)

Aurora (Criti Puiu) **1/2 - This is a rather divisive film. Some people call it bullshit, others calling it brilliant. I can see the argument for both. I have not seen the director's previous film The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (I still plan to see it). This one's an interesting one if not totally successful. This is about a man who goes crazy, buys a gun and kills a few people for reasons that are unclear though one can extrapolate a few. The film is pretty much a very slow burn with very little pay-off so it was tough to get through but it has some good moments

Snow White and the Huntsman (Rupert Sanders) **1/2 - First things first, this is DEFINITELY better than the other Snow White movie this year Mirror, Mirror. This version gives a darker, more feminist take on the Grimm Brothers fairy tale. On the positive side, there are some really cool visuals and effects and Charlize Theron is a pretty awesome Evil Queen. She humanizes her and makes her scary. On the debit side, I'm sorry but Kristen Stewart is a rather poor Snow White. I don't know if I'm being fair to her performance or my views are colored by my distaste for Stewart's celebrity and public persona but I simply cannot buy her as this beautiful, inspirational, radiant, strong and pure-hearted character she's supposed to be playing. Add to that the rather abrupt, disappointing climax and an attempt to throw in a Twilight-esque love triangle in there, this qualifies as a disappointment. Which is too bad because it could've been a really awesome movie with just a recast and one script tweak.

Thanks for the round-up man. Charlize Theron sounds like she'd make an epic Evil Queen, I'm a huge fan of her.

I had no idea really what the Snow White movie was like.

I heard Theron made a good evil queen, but Stewart doesn't quite seem like snow white to me. And Thor probably doesn't make a difference.

Dude.

Thank you.

No, seriously. Snow White was a movie I was lookin' forward to, but my entire crew is fairly certain the Twilight girl was going to ruin it somehow.

At least this lends credibility to that argument! I mean, I just KNEW she was going to screw it up somehow.

I still think Thor made a good huntsman though, and it's good to hear that Charlize Theron just flat-out killed it. Between her performance and the amazing CGI effects, I still want to really see this...but it feels good to know I was vindicated in my vilification of Stewart.

Theron usually does do great in her roles, knew the twilight nut job would screw it up though.
