The Oscar nominations have just been announced this week. And one of the most pleasant (sort of) surprises were the nominations for The Tree of Life in the Best Picture and Best Director categories. I personally think it's one of the classiest, most amazing things the Academy has ever done and I've criticized and disagreed with many, many, many Oscar choices over the years. This is not really a "scene" per se but rather an excerpt from the controversial "creation of the universe" sequence. Many people have walked out of the film during this sequence. For me, it's a visually jaw-dropping sequence and very emotional as well. The visual effects here (which was very wrongly ignored in the Visual Effects category) was supervised by Douglas Trumbull who did the effects for 2001 and it was created largely old-school but very little, if any, CGI. I think it's still amazing that a divisive experimental art-house flick would get a huge mainstream recognition like this. Bravo to the Academy.

I'm not going to watch this, simply because I want to see the film in its entirety after reading your description.

People actually walked out over that? It was visually stunning and should have been in there for the special effects too.
I loved seeing this in theaters. Yeah, the dinosaurs/creation bit was a little out of nowhere, but holy crap it all looked so amazing.
Y'know, I remember when CGI (a cheap and easy alternative for special effect) didn't exist. I remember when the Star Wars freakin' rawked, Labyrinth and the Dark Crystal were the epitome of Jim Henson's craft, and CGI did nothing but make ANYTHING worse in comparison.
Now, like anything, if used properly it can enhance a movie-going experience, y'know? Not the be-all-end-all godommot fronk.
Now THIS?! My god, that was beautiful.
And the Academy is actually supporting this? Did the old men of the previous Academy finally die out and allow a younger breed to rise up or something?
Yeah, and I can see why people would walk out of this movie, and all for the wrong reasons. Some people simply cannot see anything beyond their own tunnel vision.
Sad, what they miss out on because of this.
I'm going to look this up straight away, looks like something I would watch.
